Weekly outdoor session, Zoliborz district
The story behind the activity program, and what guides how we run it in Warszawa.
Vuvopu started in 2018 as a single Saturday walking group in the Zoliborz area. A retired teacher and a physiotherapist noticed that many older residents in the neighborhood spent most of their week without a fixed reason to leave the house. They booked a room at a local community hall, put up a handwritten notice, and eight people showed up for the first session. That group became the starting point for what Vuvopu is today: a structured activity program built around regular movement, low-cost group outings, and conversation.
Over eight years the program grew from that one weekly meeting into a schedule covering four districts across Warszawa. The team now counts 14 people, including exercise instructors, walk leaders, and a coordinator who plans the monthly calendar. In that time the program has worked with 1008 clients and completed 1581 individual sessions and outings. On average that is about 126 new participants a year, though many people stay involved for several seasons rather than joining once and leaving. Of everyone who has taken part, 290 have come back for a second block of activities after finishing their first, which tells us more about repeat interest than any single number could.

The mission is straightforward: give retirees in Warszawa a reliable, affordable way to stay physically active and socially connected, without requiring a gym membership or a car. We are not trying to replace medical advice or physiotherapy — instructors adjust pace and difficulty, but sessions are general activity, not treatment. The long-term aim is that people keep showing up because the sessions fit into their week, not because they feel obligated to attend.
We think about the program in terms of five services: guided walking groups, seated and standing exercise classes, day trips to places around Warszawa, board game and conversation afternoons, and a monthly health-talk session with a visiting speaker. Each one addresses a different part of daily life — movement, structure, curiosity, and company — rather than trying to be one broad offer that covers everything poorly.
None of this is about promising results we cannot measure. We do not claim a satisfaction rate or a guaranteed health outcome, because those are not things a activity program can honestly back up. What we can say is that the same people keep signing up season after season, and that repeat participation is the number we watch most closely internally.

Eight years in, the plan is not to expand aggressively but to keep the four districts we cover well served before considering a fifth. Warszawa is a large city, and stretching the same 14 people across more ground would mean smaller groups getting less attention. For now, the focus stays on the sessions already running and on making sure new participants find the right group for their pace and interests.

An informal weekly meeting over coffee and tea, with a loose topic to open discussion. No fixed structure. Open to anyone in the program, including partners and neighbours.
Fees are billed monthly and can be paused for planned absences of two weeks or more. A request submitted through the contact form or by phone typically gets a reply within 24 hours. Since 2018, the program has grown to serve just over a thousand participants across the four districts, with a fair number returning for a second activity after finishing their first.
